You are not required to use Zoom or Panopto. If you would like to utilize these tools in your teaching and learning, there are two scenarios to be aware of regarding successful implementation at your Canvas site.

How to activate Panopto for your Canvas Course.

Two ways that you can activate Zoom and Panopto in your Canvas course.

Scenario 1: Zoom and Panopto are available in the Course Navigation Menu

When you receive your curricular Canvas site, Zoom and Panopto should be available in the site's Course Navigation Menu on the left. You will need to first activate your Panopto class folder:

  1. Click on the "Panopto Video" in your Canvas course left-hand navigation menu. This will create a course folder in Panopto linked to your membership in Canvas.
    1. (You only need to make that initial click/visit once to complete setup.
  2. Create a Zoom recording.
  3. The Zoom recording will automatically be moved into your Panopto account and appear in the "Panopto Video" page of your Canvas site.
    1. You can also view recordings directly from Panopto.


Scenario 2: Zoom and Panopto are not showing in Course Nav - requires editing Nav Menu and then action to complete setup

If you are not seeing Zoom and Panopto Video as default options in your Canvas course navigation you will need to add them:

  1. Click “Settings” at bottom of the Course Navigation Menu.
  2. Select the “Navigation” tab (located about top middle of the page).
    • At the “Navigation” page, there is a top section and a bottom section.
    • Generally, areas of Canvas you want to share with students or tools you need to activate go in the top section.
  3. Scroll down the list of navigation tabs to locate “Panopto Video”.
  4. At the Panopto Video tab, click on the 3 dots at the right end and select "Enable".
  5. Once enabled, you can drag and drop to change the order of the navigation menu items - we recommend placing next to the Zoom link.
  6. Important step: When finished, click the blue “Save” button at the bottom left of the page.
  7. Click on the newly added "Panopto Video" Nav link in your Canvas course to finish activation (that initial visit completes the setup)
