Recording a Microphone to Adobe Audition Multitrack Session - Video Edit Suite

Overview

This article describes recording a microphone with the Zoom UAC-2 interface into Adobe Audition.

• You will need to get an microphone with an XLR connector from Media Loan.
• You will also need an XLR mic cable

Audio Interface

The Video Edit Suites have a Zoom UAC-2 audio interface.

• There are two XLR/1/4" mic/instrument inputs on the front.
  • Microphones can be connected to theses inputs with XLR cables.
  • Guitars can be connected with 1/4" cables.
  • Each input has:
    • Gain control
      • Rotate the knob to adjust levels
    • Hi-Z
      • Press when connecting high impedance sources like an electric guitar.
    • Phantom Power
      • Press the 48V 1-2 button

Recording

Setting Mic Levels

1. Connect the microphone to Input 1 on the Zoom UAC-2
2. If it is a condenser mic turn on the phantom power.
   • Press and the 48V 1-2 button
3. Talk into to the mic
4. Adjust the trim knob while looking at the Clip Sig light for Input 1 on the Zoom UAC-2.
5. turn up the gain control until the light is red. Then turn back the gain control until it is green.

Monitoring

• Turn down the silver knob on the Zoom UAC-2
• Connect the headphones to the headphone jack on the Zoom UAC-2

Audition

Create a New Multitrack Session

1. Open Audition from the dock
2. If prompted sign to the Creative Cloud Desktop app with your Evergreen email and password.
   • Adobe Creative Cloud Sign In
3. Go to File > New > Multitrack Session...
4. In the New Multitrack Session window set the following settings
   1. Session Name: use a meaningful name.
   2. Folder Location: Click Browse and select your folder on your Desktop.
   3. Template : None
   4. Sample Rate: 48000
   5. Bit Depth : 24
   6. Master: Stereo
   7. Click OK

Recording

1. Go to the Mixer window
2. On Channel One click on Default Stereo Input and select Zoom UAC-2 Driver in 1
3. On Channel One click the R button (record)
4. On Channel One click the I button.
   • This allows you to monitor the input.
5. Put on the headphones
6. Turn up the headphone levels on the Zoom UAC-2
7. Talk into the microphone and adjust the Gain knob on the Zoom UAC-2 while looking at the meter in Audition
   • Try to get the signal in the yellow but not in the red in Audition.
   • Make sure that the Clip Sig light for Input 1 does not turn red.
8. Click the Record button (Red dot) at the bottom to start recording.
9. Hit the Stop button to stop recording.
10. Repeat as needed.

Playback

• If you need to listen to the audio with the speakers turn off the Input button
  • Click the I button.
• Take off the headphones.
• Now you can turn up the silver output knob ion the Zoom UAC-2 and the listen with the speakers.

Editing and Exporting

• After recording you can edit the audio.
• You will need to export the Multitrack Session to a mono or stereo wav file when you are done
