{{stub}}

==Introduction==
There are many times when you need to write in a foreign language or use symbols in your text document. There are hundreds of characters available that are not on the standard keyboard. Many commonly used symbols are letters from the Greek alphabet (π, Φ, β), accented or other letters from foreign alphabets (é, ö, ç) and icons.<BR>

==Microsoft Word==
In Microsoft Word, symbols and foreign language letters can be directly added to the document by going into the "Insert" menu and selecting "Symbol". You will get a dialogue box like the one shown below. On the "Symbols" tab, make sure that the font is set to (normal text) for most special letters. Icons and other symbols can be found under other options. The "Special Characters" tab is used for more common grammatical symbols. Find the character you want by clicking on the box it appears in. Click on "Insert" to place the character in your document exactly where you left the cursor. When you add the character, it will show up in the font that you are currently using. If you are going to be using the character frequently in the document, you should take note of the Shortcut Key listed in the box when the character is highlighted and use that keystroke combination instead of the menu option. If there is no shortcut key or you prefer to use your own, click on "Shortcut Key". This option will prompt you to choose a customized shortcut keystroke combination to make it quicker and easier to insert that character. <br>

==Windows Character Map==
When using an application without the "Insert → Symbol" option, you can use the PC’s default shortcuts. Click on "Start -- Programs -- Accessories -- System Tools -- Character Map. Select the desired font from the drop-down menu and find the character you want, not all fonts have all special charecters, or the same set of special charecters. You can use the keystroke listed for the character or copy it to the clipboard. To do this, highlight the character, click on ''Select'' (this will put your character in the white box on the top right), and click on "Copy". Now you can go to the application where you want to insert the character and go to "Edit" and select "Paste" (or use the keystroke “Control”+“V”). You can always use the keystroke listed for the character as a shortcut from any program. Hold down “Alt” and press the sequence of numbers to produce that character. <br>

==Macintosh OS X==
All the available symbols can be inserted into any application by using the regular keyboard keys in addition to holding down “shift”, “option/alt”, or both “shift” and “option”. To see which key combinations produce what, go to the "Applications -- Utilities -- Key Caps." Select the font you want from the Font menu. The keyboard diagram in the window will show you all characters in that font available by striking a single key on the keyboard. Press the “shift” key to see all available symbols that can be inserted by holding “shift” while you strike the key. Continue to search for your desired symbol by using the combinations mentioned above.

Key combinations for accented letters:
* á, é, í, ó, ú (Acute) Press and hold option” while you hit “e”. Release. Hit the letter you want.
* â, ê, î, ô, û (Circumflex) Press and hold “option” while you hit “i”. Release. Hit the letter you want.
* à, è, ì, ò, ù (Grave) Press and hold “option” while you hit “`/~”. Release. Hit the letter you want.
* ä, ë, ï, ö, ü (Umlaut) Press and hold “option” while you hit “u”. Release. Hit the letter you want.
* ã, õ, ñ (Tilde) Press and hold "option" while you hit "n". Release. Hit the letter you want.

{{stub}}

==Introduction==
If (and only if) one used styles in creating a document in Word, a functional and dynamic table of contents can be generated.

==Inserting a Table of Contents==
First off, the text of the document should be edited with styles, with the chapter headings that are to appear in the TOC using the Header series of styles. If you have only one level of heading, it should be heading1 style. If you want subheadings they should use the next available heading number. While it is possible to use any style as a header (insert-->index and tables--> options), the index and tables dialog expects the preset heading styles by default.
*Insert --> Index and Tables
*choose the "table of contents" tab
*Pick a formating style.(these are just TOC style that can be modified in Format--> Styles)
*Choose a tab leader from the lower right hand corner
*In "show levels" select the levels of headings you want to appear in the TOC
*Hit "ok"
Now all this will give you is a field (shiver), (which youll prolly want to put a section break after, and change the numbering style in each section if you dont want the toc to be on page 1 and not like, iv-i) to see the output of the field one can use print preview.

==Editing the field==
Now you will see something like <nowiki>{ TOC /o "1-3"}</nowiki>
Which of course, leads to the question what does that mean? and what else can i stuff in there?

*TOC stands for Table of Contents.
*\o with its argument "1-3" tells Word to use Headings 1-3 to build the table of contents.

Other possible switches:
*\n if you dont want to display page numbers in the TOC. If you want some headers to have page numbers and some not use \n with and argument of the headings to be ommited. such as <nowiki>{TOC \o "1-3" \n 2-3} </nowiki>would display heading levels 1-3 in the TOC but only have page numbers for the heading1 style.
*\b for a partial table of contents. Perhaps you want to put a table of contents for each chapter at the beginning of that chapter. Select the portion of the document you want the table of contents to cover and assign a bookmark (insert-->bookmark), such as “Chapter1.” Then insert the \b switch, followed by the bookmark name, in the TOC field, like this: <nowiki> { TOC \b Chapter1 \o "1-3" }</nowiki>
*\p insert custom leader, doesnt work very well, use the leaders in the TOC dialog.
*\w preserves tab entries within table entries. (im not really sure)
*\x preserves line breaks in headings.
*\s and \d \s put a chaper number before the page number. \d indicates the seperator.

Cc chris01:

{{stub}}__NOTOC__
The following (and associated pages) have been compiled as technical resources that might be helpful for MES students in building and formatting their thesis. These guidelines are based on the [http://www.evergreen.edu/mes/docs/thesishandbook.pdf MES Thesis Handbook] and suggestions from former students. This assumes Microsoft Word 2003 is being used, other versions may vary. For those who wish to compose alternative solutions or solutions using different editors (such as open office), please feel free to contribute!

==Quick Tips==
====Preformat your document before you start====
The guidelines for formatting your document are laid out. Take the time before you begin assembling your thesis to format a blank document with all the necessary components, sections, pagination, etc.. Life will be easier if you set it up right ahead of time.

====Don't copy and paste from another Word Document====
Word is notorious for transferring formatting from one document to another. If you copy from a document that has pre-formatted components (margins, spacing, fonts, etc..) this will then crash into the formatting of your current doc creating a mess of formatting junk which can often be extremely hard to recover. Best rule of thumb; Copy text into a text editor (notepad, textmate, etc..) that will strip out the formatting and then paste this straight text into your document.

====Excel data gotchas====
Excel and Word play nicely together but beware when pasting excel spreadsheets and graphs into Word that you do it right.
You can copy and paste directly from excel to word, and this will create a word table. Nice if you don't want it to look like excel.
You can inset the worksheet as an object from file, and this can either paste it as an object into Word or it will let you link the spreadsheet into word which has good side and bad. The good side is that you can edit you excel spreadsheet and it will be reflected in your document. The bad side is that they are linked, and if you move or delete one of the files, the word document can get corrupted to the point of being A pain to recover. Bottom line, if you want to insert excel data, copy and paste it, or create an image first, this way you run less risk of corrupting your data.

Additional Help: [http://www.ehow.com/how_2124997_insert-excel-data-word-2007.html word to excel]]

====Do tabs right====
Although you can set tabs on the fly and to specific paragraphs, if you have sections which have consistent tab requirements, it pays to set these first before you start adding content. By using the format>tab feature at the beginning of each section, you can set appropriate (and consistent) tab stops for each section.

====Use Reveal Formatting====
Whenever you find yourself in a bind, format>reveal formatting will show you exactly where you are and what formatting is being applied to the page you're on. For additional information it's also helpful to go to view>thumbnails to see where you are in the document.

===What is it?===
Microsoft '''Powerpoint''' is a popular computer presentation program (think "digital slideshow"). It is most commonly used to present ideas and images in a linear sequence. It is fairly easy to learn to use Powerpoint to make simple "click-through" slideshows to present your work. The program also has more advanced features that create animations and non-linear "interactive" possibilities.

Powerpoint is available for Windows or Macintosh, and in theory it is possible to bring your files between platforms. These files have a .ppt extension. Similar programs which may both open and export Powerpoint files are Apple Keynote (only on Mac OSX) and OpenOffice Impress.

For resources and help learning and using Powerpoint, please see the [[About Powerpoint]] wiki page!
