Signal Tracing - Proficiency Checklist - API 1608

From Help Wiki
  1. Sign into the Log Book.
  2. Follow the start-up procedures.
  3. Explain the simple room flow, including identifying all normals to and from the API 1608.
  4. Identify and explain the different sections and overall functions of the API, including:
    • 548B Channel Module (Fader Module, Mute/Solo, Preamp, Echo/Auxillary Sends, Routing and Output Section)
      • Where is the mic/line select switch, and how do you know which is selected?
      • What are the similarities and differences between Echo Sends 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8?
      • Where are the Sub-master (group) assignment switches? Are group assignments pre or post fader?
      • What is the purpose of the pan button?
    • Echo Send/Return Module
      • Besides turning up the level of the Echo master, what else needs to happen for it to pass signal?
      • Explain what we can use the External Input to Echo Sends 1 and 2 for.
      • How would I set the dual concentric knobs for Echo Return 1 if I wanted an output of the EMT plate reverb in my main mix, panned center?
      • How would I return an effect with a stereo output into my main mix?
    • Summing Bus Sub-master Module
      • Does the trim control on each Summing Bus add gain?
    • Program Bus Masters and Monitor Output Module
      • Where is the PGM Insert, and how do I use it?
      • What is the purpose of the Monitor Output Module?
    • Control Room Monitor Control Module (Monitor Control, Monitor Source)
      • What is normalled to "6TK2" on the Monitor Source module?
      • How do I toggle between different sets of speakers?
    • Central Facilities Module (Talkback, Mute Groups, Solo Master, Channel Meter Control)
      • How do I know if the channel VU meters are showing pre or post fader level? What else can the VU meters 1-8 show?
  5. Patch in a stereo source (output of CD player, stereo mini out, etc) to a pair of input channels of the API.
  6. With the block diagramLinks to an external site. in hand, trance the signal flow of these Line Inputs all the way to Program and listen to the signal in stereo.
  7. Imagine this signal is a live singer. Demonstrate how to get this signal to their headphones.
  8. Explain the features of the 3 band equalizer.
  9. Open Protools and save a project using the "API Stereo" template.
  10. Record your signal into Protools
  11. Listen back to the signal you recorded. How are you listening to it? What's another way to do it?
  12. Explain the Protools Cue routing (in the API Stereo template) and where those outputs are normalled to on the API.
  13. Get signal to headphones from a pre-recorded Protools track.
  14. Explain mixing options through board or Protools and how to monitor your mix in either situation.
  15. Normalize the API and patch bay.
  16. Follow the shut-down procedures.
  17. Sign Out (computer and log book).
