Excel templates provide a pre-made framework for specific spreadsheet applications, like budgets, receipts, calendars, schedules, etc. This is useful if you know what you want your spreadsheet to do, but are not sure, or do not have the time to set it up.

Finding a Template

Excel has a large number of built-in templates. You are given an option to use a template when you create a new spreadsheet. In addition, Microsoft keeps a sorted and searchable database online with thousands of templates.

Applying a Template

Once you select a template that is built into Excel, it will automatically apply that template to your new spreadsheet. If you choose to download a template from Microsoft's database, you can opt to use it in the New Spreadsheet dialog.
