Get files from Orca

If your files are on Orca, log onto Orca and copy your folder to the User Drive.

Set your Scratch Disk

When you open Final Cut it will display a dialog about the Scratch Disks.

  1. After opening Final Cut a dialog box will open asking to “Set Your Scratch Disks”.
  2. Click the Set button, browse to your folder in the User Drive and select it.
  3. Click Choose to make it the default location to store all your content.

Sequences

Sequence Settings

The Sequence Setting that we want to use is Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920 x 1080 60i 48khz.

Changing the default sequence setting

  1. Go to the Final Cut Pro menu and select Audio/Video Settings.
  2. For the Sequence Preset setting select Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920 x 1080 60i 48khz and click OK.
  3. Any sequences made after this change will have the proper setting.

Changing an existing sequence

  1. Click in the Timeline of the sequence that needs to be changed.
  2. Go to Sequence > Settings.
  3. Click Load Sequence Preset in the lower left corner.
  4. In the new window select Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920 x 1080 60i 48khz.

Creating New Sequences

  1. Go to File > New > Sequence
  2. A new sequence will be created in the Browser.
  3. Name the sequence.

Nested Sequences

Sequences can be added to other sequences. This can help in organization. For example you can edit multiple sequence for different sections other the project. The can then be combined in a master sequence.

In an existing sequence a group of consecutive items can be nested.

  1. Select all of the clips to be nested with the Selection Tool.
  2. Go to Sequence > Nest Items.
  3. In the new window name the new sequence. The setting should match your existing clips.
  4. Click OK.


Tools

  • Selection Tool:

The Selection Tool is used for selection clips in the timeline. The keyboard shortcut is the a key.

  • Pen Tool:

The Pen Tool is used for creating keyframe points for audio volume, opacity and other effects. The keyboard shortcut is the p key.

  • Blade Tool:

The Blade Tool is used for cutting a clip into a multiple clips in the Timeline. The keyboard shortcut is the b key.

Linking

Normally the video and audio tracks of a clip are linked together. If you need to edit them separately they need to be unlinked. Unlinking

  1. With the Selection Tool select the clip in the Timeline.
  2. Go to Modify > Link. There should be a check mark next to Link. After you select it the check mark will be turned off.
  3. In the Timeline click in the background.
  4. Select the audio or video track of the clip. It will be selected but the formally linked tracks.

  1. In the lower right corner of the Viewer click on the Generators button ( it looks like an 'A in a filmstrip.
  2. Select the Text menu and then the Text option. In the Viewer in will now display Sample Text.
  3. In the Viewer click the Controls tab.
  4. In the Text field change the text.
  5. Select the font and size and needed.
  6. Click the Video tab to see how the titles look.
  7. Click in the middle of the VIewer window and drag the clip to the Timeline.

Cross Dissolves

A cross dissolve can be added between two consecutive clips int the 'Timeline.

  1. With the Selection Tool click the edit point at the meeting point of the two clips.
  2. Right click and select Add Transition Cross Dissolve'. A cross dissolve will be added to the clips.
  3. Double click on the Cross Dissolve to open the Cross Dissolve Editor in the Viewer.
  4. To change the length of the dissolve change the numbers in the upper left corner of the Viewer. The numbers represent Hours:MInutes:Seconds:Frames.

Subclips

Subclips allows you to make a smaller clip based on a another clip.

  1. In the Timeline double click the clip to open it in the Viewer.
  2. Go to Modify > Make Subclip.
  3. The subclip will be added to the Browser.
  4. Name the subclip.

Snapping

When Snapping is turned on the Playhead will jump to edit points and clips beginnings and ends when it is dragged. Turning Snapping off will allow you to move the Playhead freely. Snapping can be turned on or off by pressing the n key or by pressing the Snapping icon in the upper right corner of the Timeline.
