Microsoft Word is a text and document editor. It is available on both Mac and Windows computers, and allows users to edit most (if not all) features of their document (including font type, size and color, lists, margins, headers/footers, references/footnotes, borders, and more).
Open Office Writer is a free piece of software which has many similar features to Word. WordPad (Windows), TextEdit (Mac) and Notepad (Windows) are also text editors, all packaged with their respective operating systems, and all offer varying degrees of the features of Word.
