Log and Transfer

Saving Your Source Footage

When transferring files from a camera that records to a memory card, Final Cut needs the contents of the memory card to remain intact. Final Cut can import directly from the card or from a copy of the entire folder. Copy the entire contents of the memory card to the User Drives or an external drive.

  1. For the Canon Rebel DSLR T1/2i the entire DCIM folder needs to be copied intact.

Log and Transfer

  1. Go to File > Log and Transfer, or Shift+Command+8.

Setting Preferences

Our labs are set to convert clips from the Canon T1i and T2i to Apple ProRes 422 (LT).

Note: If you are working on Final Cut 7 from home please Aaron Kruse about installing extra software to download files from the T1/2i.

Importing Clips

  1. If a camera is connected to the computer, the Log and Transfer window will automatically display the clips. If not, click the Add Volume (Command+i) and select the folder copied from the camera.
  2. To ingest your footage select the clip you want to transfer. Set the in and out points, set the Clip Name and Reel Name and then click ‘Add Clip to Queue’. Once placed in the Queue, media will begin to transfer immediately to the Browser.

Sequence Settings

The recommended Sequence Setting for HD is Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920 x 1080 60i 48khz. This will work with the XDCAM files from the CCAM and with the clips from the Vixia and Sony NX5u cameras from Media Loan.

See the Sequence Settings HD tutorial for instructions on setting the Sequence Settings.

Monitoring Your Footage

Do not use the NTSC video monitor to watch your video. Instead you can preview using the computer monitor with Digital Cinema Desktop.

See the Video Playback HD tutorial for instructions.
