Inserting symbols into a word document can be done in two ways--first, using Word insert feature, and the second varies depending on your OS:

In Word, you can click Symbol in the Insert tab, and then click "more symbols." Then just choose a symbol from the list.

On Windows, you can also click on "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. Then choose the symbol you want.

On Macintosh, you can go to Edit > Special Characters to select the character you want from the menu.
