Setting Up MFA with Phone (SMS or Voice Call)

This guide will help you set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using your phone to receive verification codes via text message (SMS) or voice call. Follow the steps below to configure this method.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Switch to other MFA option

  • Choose your preferred method. We strongly recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator App for its security and convenience. If you wish to choose an option other than the Authenticator App click on the link I want to setup a different option.
Choose other MFA option
  • Chose the phone option

Step 2: Enter Your Phone Number

  • Choose your country and enter your phone number.
  • Select one of the following options:
  * Text me a code (SMS).
  * Call me (voice call).

Step 3: Verify Your Phone

  • You will receive a code via text or a phone call.
  • Enter the verification code into the setup page to confirm your phone number.

Tips for Using Phone-Based MFA

  • Ensure that you have reliable cellular coverage when using SMS or voice call for MFA.
  • Be cautious of potential security risks with SMS, such as SIM-swapping attacks. If possible, consider using the Microsoft Authenticator App instead.
  • Always keep a secondary MFA method (like the Authenticator App or hardware token) as a backup in case of phone issues.
