Computer Center Consultant

Job Description

Provides courteous and knowledgeable assistance to users of the Computer Center. Monitors the Computer Center, maintaining orderly conduct and enforcing policies. Performs general maintenance or clean-up tasks in the Center. Attendance at orientation and at weekly meetings and training sessions is required. Responsible for learning to use and troubleshoot the software available in the Computer Center -- Consultant I's are expected to develop skills of a Consultant II within one academic year.

  • Strong people and communication skills.

Job-related experience working with people is highly desirable. Prior familiarity with computing is highly desirable, but students with little experience are also encouraged to apply.

Student Computer Center Consultants are hired during Orientation Week. Applications will be available in the Computer Center starting in September. Interviews occur later in the month, and new consultants are hired the Friday prior to Orientation week. You do not need to have work study for this position, but work study students are certainly welcome too.

Technical Consultant

Job Description

Troubleshoot Windows and Macintosh systems in the Computer Center. Perform system maintenance tasks, including hardware and software installation and configuration. Correct problems with various academic applications, utilities, and system files. Provide technical assistance to Consultants, possibly including workshops or tutoring. Perform operator duties for academic servers. Write documentation. Perform related duties as required. May be required to work flexible hours.

Skills/Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • considerable experience with computers, including Windows, *NIX, and/or Macintosh OS X operating systems.
  • Ability to perform hardware maintenance, including installation, troubleshooting and component cleaning.
  • Ability to identify problems with hardware and software, diagnose and take steps to resolve.
  • Ability to create and modify script files for various systems (Windows batch files, *NIX shell scripts, AppleScript). * Applicants should possess a willingness to learn, be mature, responsible, able to cooperate, and have strong people and communication skills.
  • Previous experience as a Computer Center Consultant is highly desirable.
