The Microsoft Authenticator App is the recommended option for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It provides a secure, convenient way to verify your identity using notifications or one-time passcodes (OTP) on your smartphone.

Follow the steps below to set up MFA using the Microsoft Authenticator App. The webpages you see when logging in after MFA required will walk you through the steps but we are also providing written instructions to help you.

Step 1: Start the Setup Process

  • Sign in to your account at https://my.evergreen.edu.
  • You will see the "Keep your account secure" screen, as shown below:
  • By default, the system will guide you to set up the Microsoft Authenticator App. This is the preferred method for MFA.
Keep your account secure
Choose Authenticator

Step 2: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App

Step 3: Link Your Account to the App

  • The setup page will display a QR code for you to scan.
  • Open the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone:
    • Tap Add Account.
    • Select Work or School Account.
  • Use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code on the setup page.

Step 4: Verify and Complete the Setup

  1. After scanning the QR code, the app will link to your Evergreen account. (Initially this will display your temporary username that you used to setup your account but it will automatically adjust to your updated UPN/email address/username in the next few days.)
  2. A test notification will be sent to your app.
  3. Approve the notification on your phone to confirm that the app is working.
  4. Once verified, click Next on the setup page to complete the process.

Tips for Using the Authenticator App

  • Backup Your App: Enable cloud backup in the app settings to save your accounts securely.
  • Notifications Not Working? Ensure notifications are enabled for the app in your phone settings.
  • Lost Your Phone? Add a secondary MFA method (e.g., phone or token) as a backup.
