Overview

This article describes recording a microphone with the MiniFuse 2 interface into Premiere Pro.

  • You will need to get an microphone with an XLR connector from Media Loan.
  • You will also need an XLR mic cable

Audio Interface

The Video Edit Suites have a MiniFuse 2 audio interface.

  • There are two XLR/1/4" mic/instrument inputs on the front.
    • Microphones can be connected to theses inputs with XLR cables.
    • Guitars can be connected with 1/4" cables.
    • Each input has:
      • Gain control
        • Rotate the knob to adjust levels
      • Hi-Z
        • Press when connecting high impedance sources like an electric guitar.
      • Phantom Power
        • Press the 48V button

Creating a Project in Premiere Pro

  • Open Premiere Pro from the dock
  • If prompted sign to the Creative Cloud Desktop app with your Evergreen email and password.
  • If you have an existing project open that file
  • If you are making a new project:
    1. Click New Project
    2. In the new window set the following settings
      1. Project Name: use a meaningful name.
      2. Project Location: Click Browse and select your folder on your Desktop.
    3. Click Create in the lower right corner.

Recording

Setting Up the MiniFuse 2

  1. Turn down the Monitor knob on the MiniFuse 2.
  2. Plug your microphone into the MiniFuse 2 Input 1
  3. Set the preamp levels with the Gain knob.
  4. Adjust the gain knob while looking at the LED light on the Input 1 knob.
  5. Turn up the gain control until the light is red. Then turn back the gain control until it is blue.
  6. Set the Mix knob to 12:00.
  7. Set the MiniFuse 2 headphone knob to 2:00.
  8. Press the Direct Mono button to hear the microphone signal in both sides of the headphones.
  9. Adjust the volumes knob on the headphone amp for each headphone that you are using.
    • If the input meters look good but it’s still hard to hear, try turning up the headphone level.

Creating a Mono Audio Track

  1. If you are recording with just one microphone it is best to use a mono audio track.
  2. Go to Sequence > Add Tracks...
  3. The Add Tracks windows will open
  4. Set Add Video Tracks to 0
  5. Set Add Audio Tracks to 1
  6. Set Track Type to Mono
  7. Click OK

Recording the First Track

  1. Right-click on the new audio track and select Voice-Over Record Settings
  2. Set the input to System Default - MiniFuse 2: Mic/Line/Inst 1
  3. Set the microphone levels while looking at the LED lights on the Gain knob and the levels in Voice-Over Record Settings
  4. Click Close
  5. Set the playhead to where you want to start recording.
  6. Click the Voice-Over Record button on the track
  7. Immediately click the Mute button on the track
  8. After the countdown start recording
  9. Click the Stop button when done
  10. Click the Mute button on the trackcto unmute the track
  11. Click Play to playback the recording.
    • Turn the Mix all the way to the right to only hear playback
    • Turn up the Monitor knob to listen on the speakers.

Recording Additional Tracks

  • Repeat the steps above to record additional tracks,
  • If you are recordings audio while listening to previously recorded tracks Use the Mix knob to adjust the balance between the microphone and the other audio.

 End of Session

  1. Remember to save your Project before closing the file.
  2. Back ups the entire folder to an external drive or OneDrive.
  3. Quit Premiere Pro.
  4. Turn all monitor knob down.
  5. Shutdown the computer.
