This is your setup guide. Once you have completed the hardware and software checks below, proceed to our Teams Phone Quick Start for a deep dive into making calls and managing voicemail.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

  • Audience: Faculty, Staff, and Student Employees.
  • Student Employees: Your manager determines eligibility. Note that access is tied to your Microsoft 365 license.

Step 2: Prepare Your Hardware

You don’t need a desk phone to stay connected. Teams Phone works on the devices you already have:

  • Laptops: Built-in microphones are supported.
  • Headsets: OIT issues a one-time wired headset upon request. Contact your manager if you require a wireless model.
  • Desk Phones: Reserved for special circumstances. The Teams App is our primary and most efficient calling method.

Step 3: Install & Sign In

To receive campus calls on your computer or mobile device:

  1. Download the Microsoft Teams App.
  2. Sign in with your Evergreen email and password.
  3. Mobile Users: Get the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

What is Teams Phone?

Teams Phone is the latest telecommunications service offering from the Office of Information Technology (OIT). It combines the functionality of Microsoft Teams with the ability to place and receive telephone calls using your campus phone number through the Microsoft Teams application.

How Teams Phone differs from your current desk phone service:

Can I have a desk phone and also use Teams Phone?

Desk phones are primarily reserved for individuals with special circumstances. However, with Microsoft Teams and the Teams app on your computer and smartphone, you can place and receive calls and check voicemails directly through the app, making it a convenient and efficient alternative to a traditional desk phone.

How do I receive my campus calls on my cell phone with Teams Phone?

You’ll need to download the Microsoft Teams app from the Apple App Store. You can also download the app directly. Once you sign in with your Evergreen email and password, you’ll be able to receive and place campus phone calls directly from the Teams app.

What will I need to use Teams Phone?

You will need a computer or smartphone with Microsoft Teams installed. Note: Non-employee students are not eligible to use Teams Phone.

Laptop

If you’re using a laptop, the built-in microphone will work to place and receive calls.

Headset

  • We will issue a one-time wired headset to anyone who needs one.
  • If you need a wireless headset, work with your manager to order one. Please note that we cannot recommend specific headsets, but you can purchase a compatible one through your usual channels.

Desk Phone

Desk phones are prioritized for individuals with special circumstances. However, with the Teams app on your computer and smartphone, you can manage all your calls and voicemails efficiently without needing a traditional desk phone.

How are emergency (911) calls handled with Teams Phone?

When using Teams Phone for emergency (911) calls at Evergreen State College, here's how it works:

  • On Campus: If you are connected via wired or WiFi on campus, your location is determined automatically.
  • Off Campus: When you are off campus, you will need to set your location manually within the Teams application’s “Calls” tab.

These steps ensure that emergency services can accurately locate you when you make a 911 call.

What if I’m a student employee? Am I eligible to use Teams Phone?

Your manager will determine if you meet all the criteria mentioned above for being a good fit for Teams Phone and you’re a student employee.

Please note that if you lose your Microsoft 365 license, you will also lose access to Teams Phone.
