Accessibility Checking and Testing

• All employees at the college - faculty, staff, student-staff - are responsible for creating accessible content.
• The key to effective digital accessibility is implementing accessible practices proactively, making sure all content is accessible before sharing it with others.
• Accessible universal design essentials meet both compliance and design best practices.

Rich Content Editor

• As you create pages, discussions, assignments, and quizzes, you can check for issues via the Rich Content Editor's Accessibility Checker. The checker button resembles DaVinci's Vitruvian Man and is located under the content field at lower right.

Validate Links in Content

• Before you publish the site and share it with others, run the "Validate Links in Content" tool.
• For details and instructions, see Canvas guide, How do I validate links in a course?
• The Link Validator catches broken links within the site and will alert you to external resources that have broken links.
• External resources (that are not our own) with broken links may present a barrier. If possible, ask the content owner if the resource may be updated, or choose a different resource that is already accessible per WA State guidelines (WCAG 2.2 Level AA).

UDOIT Accessibility Checker

• UDOIT stands for "Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool" and is pronounced "You Do It."
• UDOIT can scan your site's web-based content and files to identify accessibility issues. See CidiLabs short video, Introduction to UDOIT - Canvas Accessibility Assistant
• UDOIT should be available in your Canvas site's Course Navigation Menu.
  • Like the "Settings" link at bottom of the Course Navigation Menu, the UDOIT link is not visible to students, only those in the Teacher and TA role.
  • If you do not see UDOIT in the menu, edit the "Navigation" page to move the UDOIT nav link from the bottom section to the top section of the Navigation page and save your change so the link is available to you via the Course Navigation Menu.
